GENERAL EVENTS OF INTEREST TO THE SPHS COMMUNITY:

Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 10:00am – Unveiling of Historical Marker for Dr. Israel Goldstein.

Please join us at the official unveiling of the Historical Marker in tribute to Dr. Israel Goldstein on November 13, 2010 at 10a.m. Dr. Goldstein was a member of the January 1911 Class (aka the Third Graduating Class) of Southern, and was the first recipient of an SPHS Alumni Association scholarship award. In addition, Dr. Goldstein co-founded Brandeis University, and was an activist for a State of Israel. Thanks to the hard work of Celeste Morello, an author, and Philadelphia historian, and the support of Southern’s Principal Otis Hackney, the historical marker now is situated in its rightful locale, our Alma Mater. The next time you are on Broad Street near the school, take a moment to stop and look at the historical marker (located atop a pole on Broad Street between Jackson Street and Snyder Avenue at the entrance to the promenade leading to the front steps of Southern).

THANKS TO PRINCIPAL HACKNEY, FACULTY AND SUPPORT STAFF

The following is an excerpt from an email from Executive Committee Member, Marc Adelman, Southern Archives Chair:

“This past Wednesday, September 6, 2012 the Philadelphia School District announced that South
Philadelphia High School was removed from the “persistently dangerous” list. This is a major
accomplishment for Principal Hackney, his staff and students. The number of violent incidents
dramatically decreased from double digits in 2009 to a low single digit today.

This achievement was finally recognized publicly when other goals met such as a decrease in attendance violations, improvements in test scores plus the creation of a positive culture among the 20 diverse ethnic groups continue to go unnoticed by the general public.

The energy and the persistent caring for his students by Principal Hackney has encouraged a
reversal of a downward educational decline in a highly difficult time in our community. Despite
the withdrawal of some financial support by the school district, SPHS in now on the upswing
aspiring to be the best education experience for high school students in South Philly just as it was
for so many of our alumni.”
