Phil Pitts ’46

Phil’s place in the sun for Southern sports was 1943-1946 when he was a star track man. It was said he never lost a race at Neiwig Field at 12th & Bigler Sts. He ran one leg for the National Relay Town that won the Championship during the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. His teammates were Leon Barnett, Miguel Polido and Joe Carlozo. Phil ran for the legendary and famous track coach Jumbo Elliot at Villanova. After graduating Villanova , he taught in Philadelphia and became a principal of two schools. Later, Phil became the Head of Reading Program in the entire school system. Phil was inducted into the SPHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
