Joe was on Southern’s Gymnastic Team, the Track Team; a pole vaulter and the Swim Team for three years. He was a member of the 1950 Championship Team under Coach Carlo Galletta. Joe also swam butterfly and freestyle in the 1950 City Championships. He was a member of Dr. Jack Speck’s Chorus. His gym team competed at West Point against the Cadets It was military duty after Southern for 4 years and 4 years of reserve duty in the Air Force. He Traveled the world for the Strategic Air Command, playing football and volleyball on base. And most important, Joe was an ocean lifeguard on the Gulf of Mexico, in sunny Florida. Joe was inducted into the SPHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
