Carol Hecht Serotta ’63

Carol Hecht Serotta graduated from Southern in 1963. She played four Varsity sports in the three years she was there. She was the captain of the Volleyball team, the Badminton team, and the Bowling team for 3 years and captain of the Tennis team for two years. While she competed in her athletic pursuits, she managed to be one of best academic students ever to attend Southern High. Carol excelled in every subject area and graduated at the top of her class. She received numerous awards at Southern including a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.

At the University of Pennsylvania, Carol was a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon, the Mathematics Honor Society, a member of the Greek Society, and the President of her college sorority and later as advisor to this sorority for years after graduation. She also mentored future math majors for a time and was an officer of the Education Honor Society. She was acknowledged by and on Penn’s 100th year on the Women’s Athletics Committee. Upon graduating with honors with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, she was granted a full scholarship to a new program in the Graduate School of Education. She received her master’s degree in mathematics education a year later and eventually was an ABD at U of P. and was an adjunct instructor at the U of P. while finishing class requirements and exams for the PhD program. Carol participated in Sports at the University of Pennsylvania and Cabrini College/University which included Varsity Club Volleyball, Varsity Bowling, and Varsity Badminton.

 

While she was a graduate student, she went from being an adjunct in the mathematics department to being the Chair of the Education Department to being a full-time tenured mathematics professor. She then served as the Department Chair for almost 20 years until 2016. Since then, she has volunteered in Cabrini’s Math Lab and tutoring programs and taught several courses as an adjunct. Throughout her tenure at Cabrini, she was involved with the athletes and the athletic programs. She was honored to be chosen as the Lindback Professor of the year. She was selected to be an honorary alumna of Cabrini College. After her years at Cabrini, she was awarded the status of Professor Emerita and is currently the Chair of the Faculty Retirees Committee.

Her proudest achievements are her wonderful family Howard, her husband, her sons and daughters and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.,
